Rome's 9/11
Those of us who enjoyed Empire of Debt and find insight and/or amusement in applying the experiences of empires gone by to present-day America would do well to check out this piece in the New York Times by author Robert Harris. He describes the Roman Republic's 9/11 — a series of "terrorist" attacks in 68 BC that prompted the Senate to give nearly dictatorial powers to Pompey. Within a generation, Julius Caesar had crossed the Rubicon and the rest is history.
