Orwellian language watch
One of the major radio station chains in the United States has gotten out from under a raft of indecency complaints filed with the Federal Communications Commission over the hijinks of shock jock Mancow Muller. How? With what the company calls a "voluntary contribution of $300,000 to the United States Treasury." The linked article does not clearly attribute this gem of Orwellian language, whether it's the company or the FCC, but does it really matter?
I know, I know — the government conducts shakedowns of businesses in this fashion all the time. But the perversion of the word voluntary is a new one on me.
