"What's right for America"
This humble blogger takes no official position on immigration. But I was struck by President Bush's remarks today defending the immigration bill proposed in Congress.
If you want to kill the bill, if you don't want to do what's right for America, you can pick one little aspect out of it. You can use it to frighten people.
Or you can show leadership and solve this problem once and for all so the people who wear the uniform in this crowd can do the job we expect them to do.
A very telling passage, this. For one thing, he says the people who oppose him on this issue "don't want to do what's right for America." The flip side of this, of course, is that they must mean America harm. Like the people who oppose his Iraq policy.
For another thing, he retreats behind the defense of "people who wear the uniform." He delivered this speech at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center. So if you oppose him, you oppose the people who stand up for the law. Just as those who oppose his Iraq policy are undermining the troops.
I can't tell from this transcript whether these were prepared remarks or if he said this off the cuff. And I'm not sure which possibility frightens me more.
