It's now a matter of time when, not if it will explode. We are still in a mixed position of inflation(insurance, utilities, education) and deflation(home prices, rents) so you still have a small window of time to protect yourself. What is safe? I'd bet on the necessities of life first and hard assets second. All fiat currencies though history have failed. Having never experienced a failure, I have a feeling this is how they go down.
