Chris Mayer is one of the few thinkers I trust these days - but the article doesn't match the title. Nowhere does it say anything substantial about the EFFECTS of the frenetic spending by govt. Is there a study on the effects available?

Good article. My interest was particularly piqued by the last section on infrastructure spending requirements. After 3 decades or so, the US/UK model of debt-fueled and thus illusory economic growth has come unhinged just at the point when a strong economy is needed more than ever to do things like overhaul the energy infrastructure and cope with an ageing population.
