Why do you think people will wait till P/Es get less than 10 or lower? People will buy like they did in March. People have become more stock savvy than they were in 1982.

This topic is not discussed directly in this article but it worth bringing up. Bill may not be aware of this. I live in BC Canada and I can guarantee you THERE IS NO SIGN OF DEFLATION HERE! The cost is living is climbing at a steep rate. The costs for basics, food, gasoline, electricity, house prices, heating and even taxes are rapidly rising. When I cross the border to NW USA, I see some price moderation but certainly not here. So, please be aware that deflation is not real in all places.
Are there other places out there that are presently in a period of strong inflation?

When Washington's army got to the frontiers they bought food from the locals, for cash. Which is what the locals wanted in the first case.
Washington figured out that he could build the National Road so the westerners could get their goods to market, or he could march an army out west every year to provide the cash to the westerners to pay the taxes the army was there to collect.

Dear bloggers,

I am new at economics. Can someone please explain what "prices at only 5 to 8 times earnings" means? What earnings? What prices? What is the significance? Thanks.

"But the tide has turned. It rushes out between our toes, and takes with it our fondest hopes." Beautiful word picture - thanks, Bill.

You have to admire Harry for sticking to his guns day in and day out. It remains to be seen if he's right. It's hard to call anyone right in the prediction business, because it's impossible to set hard and fast deadlines.

Bill has been announcing the end of the world every day since 1999. If everything does finally collapse, the way he's predicted, in, say, 2013, was he "right" after all?

I can't out-Harry Harry, but I will say that I'm getting a little impatient with this stock market collapse business. Collapse already! Die a little faster! As soon as the Dow hits 3,000 (as Bill was promising this spring), I'm all in.

Till then, I'll sit on the sidelines as Bill duels Harry. May the better man win.

Bill: We are all entitled to our opinions but you are completely wrong on the markets. This consolidation will carry the indices 15-20% higher. Earnings are realistic and in line with an economy that was bracing for collapse and never got it. Now we realize that not only is the worst far, far behind, we're seeing some solid growth in the numbers. That's why this market is up and why it will continue to run higher.

March lows were once in a life time opportunities to buy. We'll never see that again in my life time. But 20% by EOY is possible - and that's not too bad.

excellent treatment of the Bedford, original, not derivative and segued nicely into a morality tale. O! Were it only possible to "...light out for the territories...".

In fact, one of my professors thoughtfully opined that my generation was truly the last to know the sense or essence of westward expansion. That sense is what is missing. And the pasty faced son of biutches in charge are starting to rile the proles. Wherever shall they go next?
