agree with sierra; I've seen 50 years of government get bigger and bigger while financial conditions(masked by cheap imports) get worse and worse. I realize correlation isn't causation but...

BB writes with "historical perspective" (historical memory) which is sorely lacking in today's world.
During the depression of the 1930's, "things" were so cheap you would have thought that everyone could buy what they needed....sadly, not so.
People were hungry even when fresh produce was so cheap, 250lb crates of cabbage were being sold (if a buyer was present) for as low as 25 CENTS!
Fresh produce was dumped, same for meats; huge numbers of hogs were slaughtered, as well as cattle....etc., etc.
No jobs, no money....period....

We will not recover because we have no historical memory......we will fail to "reproduce" the kind of economy we had twenty-thirty years ago when jobs were plentiful, wages were fairer....schools were better...and we had more "activists" in our society to help.

Hey, this is a "jobless recovery"!!
(SAY WHAT????)

Housing prices are good in AR, but bring enough $ with you to pay for it without a mortgage, or a very high one. Many good paying private sector jobs are leaving the state with more to follow. The State Gov. is the largest employer and most here would like a Gov. job. Police officers are in high demand, which makes no sense as there is very little violent crime here outside of Little Rock. Meth production is high in the state mainly due to someone protecting the large producers while arresting the small producers. AR is still a good place to live despite this. Beautiful lakes, parks and just simply pretty country. There is an excellent football team in OU that is fun to watch.

For starters, property taxes are scary high in Texas. All of Texas. Some of the highest in the country, and even without a state tax, it is often more burdensome in the final analysis than states that do have state tax along with property taxes. Houston is a hell hole and the first major hub for evacuees in any hurricane type evacuation effort. Central Texas is better, but it's experiencing a huge swell in house values (a belated bubble) along with a population swell, as EVERYONE has the same idea as you to move there.

As for Florida...the whole state has it's boob in the wringer. Employment in that state is the pits. It's a shame.

We all are critical of government. But how well has capitalism served us? There is no utopia, but a system where so few have some much, and so many has so little, can't be sustainable in the long-term. This is not the time for polarization, this is a time for reason.

soon2retire: here in Houston, you've got a low cost of living and low taxes but in my neighborhood there's a serial arsonist and packs of wild dogs running around...the police run speed traps to get money but don't stop crime, the roads are full of chuck holes and the worst drivers I've seen...bring your gun here and keep the citizenry civil, please.

Well since we can't escape the tax man by moving overseas, perhaps we can make a go of it in Texas. Gun possesion rates keeps the citizenry relatively civil I hear.

Another good one today Bill B. Thanks
