I am sure this will sound naive, but why does the U.S. government want to hold any gold at all?

Aliens can't see borders nor a financial crisis if they look at our planet...but they may know. And if they know, they see that in the end of the long cycle in capitalism leaders have reduced their thinking to only shortterm - to buy time. For what? Look at the bright side of all this: we are given more time to prepare, again: for what?
Ha!! ha!! ha!! ask the Aliens!

Bill,
Thank you as I am now relieved. Now that the "speculators" have another bubble to blow up, we should be good for 3 - 7 years. In the meantime, let's enjoy the new ride in a little more frugal way.
Also, you mentioned the Romans. We can definitely take this a little further. Not only do we still have the concept of "foreign adventurism" as an economic policy, but we have taken the two pillars of the system to new levels of size and sophistication. Those are "patronage" and "bread and circus". The first is a marvel of simplicity and can be explained as "When you’re IN you’re IN, when you’re OUT you’re OUT". Of course, there is a massive run to the left of this equation with consequences that can get bizarre. The other is more complex, but usually can be summarized as Nice Bedtime Stories, Media and Entertainment up the wazoo, Raising of False Hopes, Entitlements, Calls to Patriotism and “Cheerleading”, etc. It is truly amazing that with all of our so-called "advanced civilization" our governments still behave in ways that are e-x-a-c-t-l-y the same and have failed miserably time and time again (Romans and all that followed them in western civilization) …… But the Romans were great builders and loved to codify. There were other things that were beneficial, but social engineering was not something they glorified.

I sent you guys an email to the "dr" email alerting you to a formatting issue on your main page, and letting you know the solutions. It regards the "more tag" and text formatting (important since you have apparently discovered the bold button in your wordpress editor).

Bill, the word you want is not "vaquero" - it probably is "gaucho". "Vaquero" does indeed mean cowboy, but it means American cowboy. That is, vaquero is a spanish name for American cowboys, not for local cowboys.

Best,
G.
