The best way to "reduce the effect of taxes" is to stop paying them, which I highly and seriously recommend. Let the broken system fail, replace it with nothing, and let's get on with our lives!

I agree 100% that the real issue is debt. Debt and lifestyle. Debt AS a lifestyle! We have allowed an entire generation or two to be dumbed down to the point that they have not a clue about financial matters. Young people (some older also) feel entitled to have everything they want and have it now! All buy now and pay later. Not gonna work any longer. The greedy corporations and politicians have done themselves in for real. No way out, IMO.

Voter Apathy...unfortunately such apathy is the primary reason for the obvious downfall of our American economy and culture over the past 20 years. The American voter unknowingly displayed a lackadaisical, disinterested attitude (apathy) toward their civic responsibility and it resulted in the election of three successive inexperienced, ill-prepared, overly-egotistical Presidential buffoons and another 535 congressional buffoons who were and are driven more by personal Greed and Ego than by a primary desire to represent the voter consensus. Until American voters realize they have the power to throw the buffoons out of office and elect qualified representatives (who can follow the voter’s wishes), this economy and culture is destined to mediocrity and eventually to total failure. Excuse the serious note…but lack of voter apathy would have made my retirement much more enjoyable

It took us 30 years to get to where we are today. During the early 80s when Reagan was busy busting the unions, I had a bumper sticker that said:“When you are hungry, eat your Toyota.”

Once you enter a depression, economics becomes a study of catch 22s, where there are no easy solutions. Any short-term answer turns into a long-term disaster. Greenspan recently proved this with his housing bubble.

Seems like there's been a recent influx of new readers. As a reader of several years I will just say this - Ignore Bill's warnings at your peril. He's not always completely right, but is very, very seldom completely wrong.

Harry - You need to take a longer term view than a few days of the 'dow being up today'
I have almost sold my equity holdings this year, and am sitting on a 50% profit for the year because I feel there is an asymetrical risk in the market at current levels, so i will await a drop to equity market levels seen last november or confirmation that the current levels are justified by real recovery (ha, ha) before I buy equities again.

Don't worry, Harry. They want to sell something. It's all part of the business model.
