If the U.S Dollar is worth nothing how come you can still purchase items with it? The basis of any currency is to barter for goods or labor. If were were on the gold standard we would have hyper inflation and no room for growth. I am not saying the fiat currency is the way to go but with a world economy the # of people and free enterprise the gold standard will now work.
